Given the high disease burden from obesity, bariatric surgery is now more frequently being considered as an effective option for sustaining weight loss in patients with this progressive chronic health condition. 2 During 2015, overweight and obesity contributed to 8.4% of the total burden of disease and was the leading risk factor contributing to non-fatal burden. 1 In 2019 Australia had the sixth highest proportion of overweight or obese people over 15 years old among 22 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
